In the IT-network<\/span> very often much potential<\/span> is wasted<\/span>: in a homezone as well as in the Web, you<\/span> can use<\/span> little tricks<\/span> and adjustments<\/span> to significantly improve<\/span> functionality and comfort.<\/span> Here are some hints where you can tune:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1.\u00a0<\/span> LAN<\/span> bookmarks<\/span> in the browser<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Some important<\/span> devices in the local<\/span> network<\/span> offer their<\/span> configuration interface<\/span> via a web server<\/span>, which is accessible in the browser<\/span>: this includes routers, repeaters<\/span>, NAS, media server or<\/span> network printer.<\/span> Put<\/span> in the<\/span> browser of your choice<\/span> its own<\/span> bookmark folder<\/span> for this<\/span> local<\/span> addresses that<\/span> you call<\/span> as “<\/span>local” or “<\/span>LAN”.
\nIn this<\/span> bookmark folder<\/span> you<\/span> put all<\/span> important IP addresses<\/span> by drag and drop<\/span> from the address bar<\/span>. In order to<\/span> achieve<\/span> the<\/span> future<\/span> configuration<\/span> of all these<\/span> devices<\/span> in one click.<\/span> The prerequisite is<\/span> that the IP<\/span> address<\/span> is constant.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/span> High-speed<\/span> data transmission<\/span> even far away<\/span> from the router<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

Placement of the router<\/span> is often<\/span> dictated by<\/span> the location<\/span> of the splitter<\/span> or<\/span> DSL modem<\/span> and<\/span> therefore<\/span> difficult to optimize<\/span> even in unfavorable<\/span> situation.<\/span> If you are<\/span> in another room<\/span> require<\/span> optimal throughput<\/span> in<\/span> apparent<\/span> distance<\/span>, wireless, even with repeater becomes<\/span> only<\/span> an unsatisfactory<\/span> compromise.<\/span> Convincing<\/span> –<\/span> and<\/span> without<\/span> much<\/span> effort, <\/span>two<\/span> Powerline adapters<\/span> can solve the problem.<\/span> Although the<\/span> throughput<\/span> in the power grid<\/span> is well below the<\/span> theoretical<\/span> 200<\/span> or 500<\/span> Mbit<\/span> \/ s<\/span>, but that’s not the point: The<\/span> equipments at the end<\/span> of the current bridge<\/span> are connected<\/span> by cable<\/span> –<\/span> either via the<\/span> integrated switch<\/span> of the<\/span> Powerline adapter<\/span> or<\/span> via a separate<\/span> Switch.<\/span> The transmission rate <\/span>then reaches<\/span> at least Fast<\/span> Ethernet<\/span> speed<\/span> (usually<\/span> well over 100<\/span> Mbit<\/span> \/ s)<\/span>, and<\/span> so you<\/span> also stream<\/span> Blu<\/span>-ray data rates<\/span> with no problem<\/span> from A to B.<\/span><\/p>\n

4.<\/span> Useful<\/span> NET command<\/span> on the command line (Windows)<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

The<\/span> Net<\/span> command<\/span> in<\/span> the command prompt<\/span> is a very<\/span> useful tool<\/span> for many<\/span> network tasks<\/span>. After starting the<\/span> “Run”<\/span> dialogue<\/span> with Win<\/strong><\/span>-R<\/strong> you get with<\/span> cmd \/<\/span> k<\/span> net<\/span> <\/strong>use<\/strong> all<\/span> local<\/span> network connections<\/span>, with<\/span> cmd \/<\/span> k<\/span> net<\/span> <\/strong>share<\/strong> all<\/span> releases<\/span> of the current computer<\/span>. The command<\/span><\/p>\n

net use<\/span> \/<\/span> delete *<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

is particularly<\/span> useful when you<\/span> need to clean up<\/span> the existing<\/span> remote connections<\/span> because Windows<\/span> “<\/span>multiple connections” complained<\/span> during an access<\/span> attempt.<\/span> Popular<\/span> in corporate networks<\/span> is the command<\/span>:<\/p>\n

net config server<\/span><\/strong> \/ hidden<\/span>: yes
\n<\/span><\/strong>Thereafter, the<\/span> concerned<\/span> computer in the<\/span> network environment of the<\/span> other<\/span> is no longer displayed<\/span>, but remains accessible<\/span> if it<\/span> is addressed in the<\/span> Explorer<\/span> with \\<\/span> \\<\/span> computer<\/span> \\ share<\/span><\/strong> directly<\/span>. This does not\u00a0<\/span> hide the<\/span> computer<\/span> from external<\/span> network tools<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

5. Publish your External IP address in the cloud<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

DSL users receive a new public IP address on the Internet daily. Using<\/span> a Dyn-DNS Provider is often the solution for remote access to the own Home- Network. <\/span>Alternatively, you can publish the external IP\u00a0 to the Internet by using a cloud environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

For this, a cloud storage at any provider is sufficient – Microsoft Skydrive, Strato Hidrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, Ubuntu One, or whatever. <\/span>However, these cloud storage must synchronize the local file system. <\/span>They provide all these cloud storage either by default (Dropbox, Hidrive, Ubuntu One) or by installing an additional tool (Google Drive Sync, SkyDrive client). <\/span><\/p>\n

Then, for example, using the following command:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

cmd.exe \/ c [path] \\ curl.exe
\n<\/span>http:\/\/ifconfig.me>% user
\n<\/span>profile% \\ SkyDrive \\ ip.txt
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

will do the work.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span>The necessary tool for this is curl.exe and it shouldn’t be missing on any system. <\/span>It gets the own external ip-Adress address from calling ttp:\/\/ifconfig.me and writing the result to a text file in the Skydrive folder. <\/span>From the sync folder on the hard disk, the text file is automatically synced to the cloud. <\/span>This will get you access anywhere on the crucial information where your local network can be reached from outside.
\nTo use services in your Home- Net from outside you have to configure Port- Forwarding in your Router.<\/span> By routing <\/span>the standard port 21 forwarded to your home FTP server, you will gain access with ftp: \/\/ [External IP] with any FTP client such as FileZilla to your Home- FTP-Server.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
